Yangsan, promoted to the city status in 1996, is neighboring with Ulsan to the north, Busan to the south, Gimhae to the southwest, and Miryang to the west. Yangsan which is located on the southeastern part of Korean peninsular has a land area equal to 484.04 square kilometer, which takes up 4.6% of the total land surface area of the south Gyeongam province. Its administrative divisions are composed of 1 town, 4 subcounties, and 7 dongs. Yangsan has a population of 224,943 with 77,556 households as of December, 2005.

Yangsan is situated on the north of Busan and in the opposite of Gimhae with Nakdonggang River on the border. As a major suburb of Busan, Yangsan has active relations with Busan in many ways. Yangsan is the mountainous area and shows low rate of arable acreage (12.7%) and farming population (9.5%). Yangsan records the best in the cattle and chicken breeding.

The climate of Yangsan has four clearly distinguished seasons (spring, summer, fall and winter). The annual average temperature is 15.1 ¡É and the temperature range is highly variable the hottest being 26.3¡É in August and the coldest averaging around 2.0¡É in January. ?Annual average precipitation amounts to 1,796mm. The city has relatively high precipitation due to the northeaster blowing from the eastern foothills of the Sobaek Mountain Ranges and experiences only mild snowfall, making it a very comfortable place to live in.

Yangsan is also located in the center of the East Coast Industrial Belt. Convenient traffic networks including Gyeongbu Expressway, Gyeongbu Railway, nearby Busan port and Gimhae International airport all provide convenient accesses to the city from every direction. These are linked to southeastern transportation network, and minimum logistics cost due to its close proximity to an airport, a port, and expressways. Also, it can cover the Pacific-rim regions including Japan, China and East Asia, being able to function as production base and export forwarding base.

As Yangsan Industrial Complex is completed, it plays a big role to fill the shortage of the industrial land in Busan. Yangsan covers 11.6% employees of the whole mining and manufacturing industries in Gyeongnam and has the most manufacturing workers next to Changwon. In December, 2006, the number of companies registered in Yangsan is 14,838 and the employees numbered 87,500. Especially, globally recognized enterprises like CJ Corporation, NEXEN Tire and Lotte Confectionery Electronics are the main contributors to Yangsan¡¯s economic growth. In 2006 alone, Yangsan¡¯s trade volume amounted to US$2,699 Million with US$1,550 Million in export, which mainly consists of tire in terms of items.

Yangsan is rich in tradition, historical sites, natural attractions, and cultural treasures, such as the Tongdosa Temple, one of the three largest Buddhist temples in Korea, a pile of shells from the Iron Age, ancient tombs dating back to the Shilla Dynasty, the Naewonsa Temple, the traditional Gaya dynasty festival, and Mt. Yeongchuk, also called the second Mt. Geumgang.
